EVERYONE WAS IN BED when Alex got home. He came through the kitchen and never stopped. Eating was the last thing on his mind. That scene at Taggart's hut would have turned anyone's stomach. At this moment his only thought was to find Caitlin and make sure she was safe.

The door to Mam's sewing room was closed and Da was sitting in the hallway as planned, making sure Deirdre stayed put. Alex spoke briefly to him and told him about Mrs. Taggart, then climbed the stairs and quietly opened the door to the rooms where he and Caitlin slept. He sat down and sighed, glad for this day to come to an end.

Caitlin was asleep, her hair spread out on her pillow and her knees pulled to her chest. Apparently she would get cold in the night, but never could wake enough to find the covers. He undressed, slipped in beside her, pulled the blanket up and brought her closer to him.

Lass, if I have to stay by ye every minute until Deirdre's out of our home, then I'll do it.

And he meant it. Tomorrow they'd have to decide how to handle the situation at Taggart's and, even more importantly, how to handle Deirdre.

A bit later, Ian climbed his own stairs all the way to the attic. He really liked this room, high above the rest of the house. He could hear stairs creak when anyone went down, he could smell Da's coffee early in the morning, and at night he could see all across the moor, especially when the moon was at its fullest.

But tonight, he lay in his bed and just listened . . . with all his senses. The evil he had felt at the circle of stones and again at the cave left an imprint in his mind. He felt a tingle in his gut, his center, of something malignant and dark. Was it just his imagination, which he admitted could be overly active, or was it the same evil he had felt before? No. Surely not. Not in their lodge. Wabi had warned him he may experience unusual feelings as he acknowledged his abilities, but he wasn't sure what this was.

Hurry, Wabi. We need ye.

Finally, he closed off his extraordinary senses and drifted off to sleep.

Next morning Da and Jamie were about before everyone else. They had the coffee brewing and the rich aroma crept up the stairs tempting Alex to leave his warm bed where Caitlin was snuggled close, her hair all but covering his face. He gently left the bed, careful to tuck the blanket around Caitlin, and headed downstairs. He needed to talk to Da.

“It's hard to believe Mrs. Taggart’s dead. How come we didn’t know about it? Ye’d think that girl would have told us,” Jamie said. Alex had informed Da last evening, but as Jamie had been sleeping, he had not awakened him. Naturally, he was shocked at Alex's news.

Just a few moments later, Caitlin came down following that same delicious aroma of coffee that had lured Alex from their bed.
